How spray foam removal works

What happens before, during and after removal, what we’d ask of you, and what you should have in writing at the end.

Our survey visit is for scoping the work and quoting. It isn’t an independent surveyor’s assessment, and it doesn’t decide whether the foam should come out. That’s for a specialist surveyor.

Before anything is disturbed

Planning the work

  1. Your requestTell us about the property and your situation. Photos and any paperwork help, but they’re optional.
  2. Survey visitWe identify what’s there and how it was applied, measure the areas, and look at access, services in the roof space and what can be reached.
  3. Written quotationWhat will be removed and what won’t, what could change the price, what goes back afterwards, and how you pay. You shouldn’t be asked for full payment upfront.
  4. Your cancellation periodNormally 14 days. We won’t start within it unless you ask us to in writing, and we’ll explain what that means.
  5. Asbestos pre-checkThe law requires an assessment of whether asbestos is or may be present before work that could disturb it. The outcome goes in your record.
  6. Method statementHow this job will be done safely, including work at height, cables in or near the foam, and how dust is controlled. We share it with you.

In your home

What to expect on the day

  • Access. A safe route to the loft, a workable hatch, and somewhere to park. We’ll say at the survey whether scaffolding is needed.
  • Protection. Your landing, stairs and belongings are covered before work starts, and the loft is sealed off as far as practical to contain dust.
  • Removal. Only the agreed areas, by a method suited to the foam and the roof. If we find something unexpected, we stop and talk to you before going further.
  • Household. Tell us about anyone at home who may be affected by dust and noise, so we can plan around them. You don’t need to give health details.

Once the foam is off

Inspection, waste and what goes back

Inspection

Timbers, underlay and fixings are inspected where they can be reached. Findings are recorded with photographs, moisture readings and dates. What couldn’t be reached is written down too.

Repairs

Anything found is explained and priced before it’s done, unless it’s already in your quotation. Closed-cell foam on tiles may also involve roof work.

Waste

Everyone handling waste has a legal duty of care. Foam waste leaves with a registered carrier, and you receive the waste transfer note.

Reinstatement

Removal can leave a roof with little or no insulation. Moisture comes first, then what’s agreed goes back. Read about insulating afterwards.

At the end

What you should receive

  • A completion record of what was done and seen
  • Dated photographs before, during and after
  • The waste transfer note
  • Details of anything reinstated
  • Who to contact with a concern, and how it’s handled

Can I do it myself?

We haven’t found official guidance on removing it yourself, and we don’t recommend it. Safety, dust and waste duties all apply, and you wouldn’t have a record of the work. The government’s guidance warns that improper removal could lead to further issues.
